How an automatic car works
You don't need to understand a gearbox to drive one, the same way you don't need to understand a kettle to make tea. But people ask, so here's what the automatic is quietly doing while your left foot does nothing.
In a manual, you pick the gear. Low gear for pulling away and climbing, high gear for cruising, and the clutch is how you swap between them without grinding anything. In an automatic, the car makes that decision, hundreds of times an hour, and never once tells you about it.
The clever bit that replaces the clutch
A manual clutch is two plates you press together to connect the engine to the wheels. Most automatics do that job with fluid instead, a thing called a torque converter, which lets the engine keep turning while the car sits still. That's why an automatic creeps forward on its own when you lift off the brake, and why it never stalls at the lights no matter how flustered you are. No plates to grab, no clutch to drop.
P is park, locked, for when you're stopped and getting out. R is reverse. N is neutral, disconnected, rarely needed. D is drive, and D is where you'll live, because in D the car handles every gear change itself. That's the whole control panel.
How it decides
The car reads how fast you're going and how hard you're asking for power from the pedal. Press gently and it changes up early to stay quiet and save fuel. Boot it and it holds a lower gear longer to give you the shove. Modern ones have a small computer managing this so smoothly you'll barely feel the changes. That's the point of it.
