EDT Plus Pretest: The Real Total, Not the Sticker Price
Twelve EDT lessons is the number everyone quotes. It's also the number that undersells the bill by a mile. Here's the honest total, the one nobody puts on a poster.
The trap is treating twelve as the finish line. Twelve is Essential Driver Training, the mandatory minimum, and the word that matters in it is essential, which means minimum, not enough. Let's total the real thing.
The twelve you must do
Twelve hour-long EDT lessons with an ADI, logged and signed. At a middle-of-the-road forty-five euro an hour, that's five hundred and forty euro. Some places run cheaper, some dearer, but that's your baseline block. Done. Except you're not done, because twelve hours almost never makes a test-ready driver.
The hours the twelve don't cover
The RSA itself says twelve is a floor. In practice most learners need a stack of extra hours on top, and the ones who don't are the rare few who also had heaps of proper supervised practice in between. Say you need eight more. At forty-five each that's another three hundred and sixty euro, and now your lesson bill alone is knocking on nine hundred. This is the line that turns a five-hundred-euro plan into a nine-hundred-euro reality, and it's the line people leave out.
The pretest and the test
Right before the test, most people do a pretest: an hour or two in the car in the real conditions, ideally around the test centre, ironing out the last faults. Call it two hours, another ninety. Then the RSA's own fee to sit the car test, eighty-five euro. Plus the learner permit at thirty-five and the theory test at forty-five earlier in the run.
Twelve EDT lessons, a handful of extra hours, a pretest, the theory test, the permit and the test fee. You're looking at the guts of a thousand euro to go from nothing to a full licence, done once, done right. The people who budget five hundred are the people who get the shock.
And the total if you rush it
Book the test the day the twelfth lesson is signed, before you're ready, and fail. Now add another eighty-five for the re-sit, more lessons to fix what failed you, and a wait of weeks or months for the next slot. Rushing doesn't save the money. It spends it twice.
